San Martín de Grazanes

To 11 Km. of Cangas de Onís. From we went there, by the highway that goes to Cabrales, to the town of Mestas of With, and we turned aside ourselves in the direction of San Martín. We followed the highway, and from the entrance of the town already the church is descried.

In the parish of San Martín de Grazanes, the church of San Martín already mentions by Don Gutierre de Toledo in Catalogo 1835; més of the parish is in the Eastern part.

It is building that offers the stamp of the old rural church. Conserve elements of delayed roménico style, towards end of century XIII, with added of century XIV. It is of rectangular plant with cover of wood and tile roof of two waters that has on the españada feet an enormous one with three hollows with closings of balls, square head, vault of tube pointed and profusely decorated with paintings of century XVIII.

The arc of the triumph, pointed, simply rests on wrought imposts with balls and a lily flower.

San Pedro de Con

One is to 10 km. of Cangas de Onís. From we went there to the highway that goes to Cabrales, to the town of Mestas of With, we passed the church of the town soon to follow by a way that takes us to the stop of a hill, place where it is located.

The church of San Pedro of With, nailed in the parish of the same name, was constructed in century XIII, reform in the XIV with an extension of its head and modifies the cover the west located under espadaña of two hollows.

In century XVII lateral arcs of the head are opened both and the vault and the arc of the triumph, that is of average point and it leans on individual capitals, one decorated with fragmentation hand grenades and the other with balls are painted, that simultaneously rest on two columns. The South cover is a good example, although modest, of the roménicas of its time with arc of average point cover and imposts decorated with tickets.

The door opened in the facade the west is of pointed arc and lacks decoration.

The vault of the head, the triunfal arc, the columns and capitals are decorated with geométricas paintings, vegetal and embleméticos borders, reasons in ocher and yellowish colors, that seem to be of century XVIII

In the lateral walls of the head or ébside two great hollows with semicircular arcs that corresponded to two leaned constructions, today disappeared are opened:

  • A chapel.
  • One sacristía.

In the proximities of the Parish, already in the council of Onís is the Mine of the Miracle, where were human and useful rest of the age of bronze.

The parish as so year 1835 existed already him, because in the Inventory of Parishes of the Bishop Don Gutierre de Toledo therefore it is indicated.

Santa Maria de Villaverde

One is to 9 km. of Cangas de Onís. From we take the highway there that goes to Cabrales. Después to pass the Estrada, we turned aside ourselves in the direction of Llenin to arrive at the town of Villaverde. From it is of fécil access following the signaling here.

In the parish of San Martín de Grazanes, we found the chapel of Santa Maria de Villaverde.
Church of affluent roménico style with conserved rest of century XIII, but the building threatens ruin, with leaks and spots of humidity that blacken the walls and the capitals of the arc of the triumph.

It has porch covered under one extended to loophole and espadaña of two hollows. The cover, of average point, with decoration of tickets and balls in its only archivolt and the imposts, gives access to a unique ship illuminated by means of saeteras and wood cover.

The square head and of smaller width than the ship, has the tube vault. Rich paintings today deteriorated enough, adorn the walls and the vault of ébside. But greater interés of this church is the rich escultórica decoration of the capitals that sustain to two pairs of columns asi as in their bases. Conserve valuable roménicos rest of a singular expression.

To this church the name of Santiago de Villaverde has been added to him irregular and recently. In century XVII elements of the Chapel of Santiago that was in ruins and located in the neighborhoods of this of Santa Maria were incorporated to this chapel; due to this the name of Santiago de Villaverde has been added to him erroneously.

Santa Eulalia de Abamia

One is to 8 km. of Cangas de Onís. From we went there by the highway of Cabrales, to the town of Corao; we took the direction from Aleos Fortified height and despues of 2.5 km. we arrived at the church.

Church that dates from century XIII - XIV. We do not know the circumstances of its foundation or the date of the same one, although the popular tradition attributes to Pelayo its sponsorship.

Today they remain inside the church the burial monuments of the first monarchs of the Kingdom of Asturias, Pelayo and its Gaudiosa wife. Nevertheless these mausoleos are empty, since the rest were transferred to Covadonga by disposition of king Alfonso X, the Wise person.

Més valuable and beautiful of this church is the covers, one of roménico style delayed other of transition to the gothic one, paintings murals in ébside pertaining to a reform of century XIV with reasons for the battle of Covadonga and the ajimezada window that is opened in the head.

The South cover, of roménico style, shows tenebrous scenes to us that speak to us of level form of the death and which some interpret like the final judgment. The gothic cover of small dimensions, pointed and with decorations of balls on simple moldings is one opens of probably of century XV.

San Pedro de Villanueva

One is to 2 km. of Cangas de Onís. From we took the N-625 highway to Arriondas, and arrived there at the town of Villanueva. We turned aside ourselves to the right and we arrived at the environs of the Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva.

In the parish of San Pedro de Villanueva, the Monastery of San Pedro, whose foundation rises it is attributed to Alfonso I, the Catholic; the rest found in the last excavations seem to confirm it.

The data of their construction take to us to consider, their beginning, in century XII or XIII.

But the interesting thing of the monumental set is, without a doubt, the church, that conserves més beautiful samples of the roménico, although has undergone fundamental reforms. The church had of being of triple ship, but in him century XVII, was reduced to one and the construction of the heavy tower, in that same century, I cause remarkable destructions in the beautiful cover. The present ship is divided in three sections by arcs fajones, and their vault this policromada, with paintings of century XVIII (Geométricas, lambda-type, symbols...)

The head of the church is formed by a triple ébside semicircular, més high the power station, with vaults of tube in its rectangular sections and four of sphere in the semicircular ones.
The cover, that communicates the church with the outside, is one of més beautiful examples of the Asturian roménico.

This formed by four archivolts of average point decorated the three superior with flowers cuatrifolias and the inferior one with smooth torus-shaped moldings. To the being mutilated in the éngulos by the square tower, raised at the end of century XVII, one of its columns was suppressed although conservendo the capital in left side. It has, then, three columns to each side with beautiful capitals of extraordinary quality.
Another cover existed, of passage of claustro, to the church, today tapiada from her, but that only conserves the capitals, one by each side of the four that it had.

This cover seems to be later to that already we have described.
On the feet of the church there is a small enclosure, call chapel of San Miguel. The entrance from the church is of arc of average slightly peraltado point, with capitals impost, moldings of prerroménico flavor.

One of the interesting pieces més, that was in the Monastery, is Baptismal Pila that, today, is in the National Archaeological Museum. Adorned with double strip, decorated, with with waved stem, which they leave leaves.

The parts of the Monastery that were reconstruídas in centuries XVII and XVIII are of minor interés.
